Panama’s Football Integrity Under Scrutiny After Goalkeeper’s Controversial Own Goal

A match-fixing probe has been opened by Panama’s top football authority following a deeply suspicious goalkeeping error that altered the outcome of a league fixture. The incident, which unfolded in the dying seconds of a competitive match, has cast a shadow over the credibility of professional football in the country.

According to available information, goalkeeper José Calderón — a veteran international with 44 appearances for the Panama national side — deflected a cross into his own goal using his chest during the final moments of the contest on 2 May, securing a 3-2 triumph for Alianza FC. The Liga Panameña de Fútbol responded swiftly, announcing it would seek formal explanations from all parties connected to what it described as a grave situation.

In an official communiqué, the governing body acknowledged that errors are an inherent part of the sport, yet stressed that certain actions fall outside the boundaries of acceptable professional conduct. Authorities pledged to pursue the matter with full rigour, warning that proven misconduct would result in severe disciplinary measures. The statement emphasised that no single individual’s behaviour should be allowed to undermine the collective efforts of the many dedicated players, coaches and staff who uphold the standards of the competition.

Calderón‘s club, Sporting San Miguelito, independently submitted a formal grievance, calling for a swift, comprehensive and unbiased inquiry. Club officials stated they had identified troubling signs pointing to potential manipulation of the result, warning that such conduct threatens the transparency and fair-play principles that underpin the sport.

Calderón’s International Record and Panama’s World Cup Ambitions

Calderón was part of the Panama squad that travelled to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, though he remained on the substitutes’ bench throughout the tournament — including during the group-stage defeat to England, who triumphed 6-1 with Harry Kane netting three times. He never took to the field during that campaign, and his most recent outing for the national team dates back to 2021.

The incident arrives at a particularly sensitive moment for Panamanian football. The national side has been placed in the same World Cup qualifying group as England, Croatia and Ghana for the forthcoming tournament. It also follows a troubling precedent: two active players and one former professional from the domestic league faced arrest two years ago in connection with suspected manipulation of a match that took place in 2023.
