An apology from Lisandro Martinez has followed his public attack on the Manchester United leadership, with the defender also understood to have received a financial disciplinary sanction. His remarks concerned the support provided to the coaching staff and the resources available within the squad.

Atletico defeat prompts criticism of recruitment

Tuesday’s Champions League defeat against Atletico Madrid prompted the Argentine central defender to argue that head coach Michael Carrick had been given insufficient playing resources. He questioned the level of spending on reinforcements and called for technical director Jason Wilcox to deliver more.

The 28-year-old subsequently attributed that intervention to anger and disappointment. He reaffirmed his confidence in his fellow players, the coach and all those involved in efforts to improve the club’s fortunes.

Former United skipper Roy Keane offered his own assessment during an appearance on The Overlap podcast, likening the circumstances surrounding his old team to something of a circus.

Thursday discussions lead to an apology

A statement appeared on the defender’s social media account after Thursday’s discussions with United. Martinez explained that he had sat down that day with senior officials and the coach, describing a constructive meeting that allowed a frank exchange of perspectives about his reaction after Tuesday’s fixture.

Explaining his response, the Argentine said his emotional nature and intense attachment to football were well known. Disappointment at the result had driven him to voice his feelings, but he accepted that the setting and timing may have been inappropriate and offered an apology for that.

He also acknowledged that his comments had undermined the togetherness on which Manchester United thrive. In his account, everybody at the club was making every effort towards the same goal: delivering the achievements deserved by the institution and its fans.

With the episode put behind them, Martinez said the collective priority was now to secure victories. A fine is understood to be the formal disciplinary measure imposed over his remarks.

Leeds visit comes amid a difficult start

Friday will bring Carrick’s pre-match media briefing ahead of Sunday’s away encounter with Leeds United, scheduled for 14:00 BST. Elland Road is the destination for a side whose opening nine fixtures this season have produced only two victories.

Six points after six league outings leave United in 13th position in the Premier League. Whether Martinez will feature in Carrick’s selection for the Leeds trip has yet to become clear.

Contract decision remains unresolved

Considerable uncertainty is understood to surround the defender’s prospects of remaining at Old Trafford over the longer term. His existing agreement runs until the season’s conclusion, although United hold a clause allowing an additional 12 months.

The dispute arising from his comments is regarded as settled. A separate question remains unanswered, however: whether the club will exercise that extension clause.
