How the Substitution Mix-Up Unfolded

The confusion arose in the 65th minute when the fourth official raised the board showing the number 10 — Neymar’s shirt number — while the forward was temporarily on the touchline receiving medical attention for a calf problem. It has become known that Gonzalo Escobar was the player originally intended to be withdrawn, not Neymar. Robinho Jr entered the field in his place, leaving the Brazilian legend visibly furious.

Neymar attempted to re-enter the pitch and was shown a yellow card for his efforts. He then grabbed the substitution slip from the match officials and held it up in front of a television camera, using it as evidence that Escobar had been the intended replacement. After the confrontation, Neymar walked off the field and passed the captain’s armband to Escobar.
