Jordan’s Bright Start Silenced by Algerian Pressure
Nizar Al Rashdan gave the underdogs an unexpected advantage, curling a precise effort into the net in the 36th minute after Ramiz Zerrouki surrendered possession carelessly in midfield. The goal came against the run of play — Algeria had controlled the ball throughout the opening period, with Amine Gouiri and Fares Chaibi both failing to convert clear-cut chances.
Riyad Mahrez, returning to the World Cup starting lineup for the first time since 2014, came within inches of opening the scoring when a well-weighted through ball sent him clear, only for goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila to produce a timely intervention. Al Rashdan himself had tested the Algerian defence in the opening seconds, directing a header just outside the post.
