For Bruno Fernandes, recent coverage of his dealings with Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has contained numerous falsehoods. The captain has challenged the accounts circulating about the pair over the past few weeks.
Fernandes returns to the media after tactical dispute
Tuesday’s 3-2 success against Roma brought the 32-year-old back before reporters for the first time since his demotion to the substitutes’ bench. That decision followed his public objections to Carrick’s approach after United suffered a 4-1 reverse at Como.
Having regained a starting place for the Premier League loss to Chelsea, Fernandes then helped launch an unlikely recovery against Roma. United were trailing 2-0 before their captain scored from the spot in minute 58, setting their second-half turnaround in motion.
In his interview with Amazon Prime, Fernandes described a difficult spell overshadowed by persistent press conjecture. He disputed numerous accounts of events involving himself and the coach, explaining that they had resolved their differences before Carrick left him out because his displays were below the required standard. He accepted that selection judgement as justified.
Although the omission was widely interpreted as a sanction for his remarks, Fernandes acknowledged that disciplinary action would also have been legitimate. Selection authority belonged to the coach, he stressed. Neither his confidence in Carrick, the coaching team and his club colleagues nor his determination to pursue victory in every forthcoming fixture had diminished.
Roma result ends winless spell without changing the collective task
A sequence of nine fixtures without victory finally ended against Roma, giving Carrick some respite following a turbulent stretch. Asked by Amazon Prime whether the outcome would protect the coach’s position, Fernandes rejected the premise that anybody’s employment needed rescuing.
Instead, the captain emphasised how important a victory had become for both the institution and its footballers. He explained that everyone had been making a sustained, shared effort to overcome their predicament.
Schmeichel urges an end to public controversy
Former Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel welcomed the captain’s response in a radio interview with our broadcaster. His hope was that United could put the public controversy behind them and concentrate again on producing victories.
Drawing on his lengthy career, Schmeichel argued in Fernandes’ defence that press accounts generally reveal only a small portion of reality. He recalled being astonished by how frequently stories about his own employers bore no resemblance to what had actually happened.
For both Manchester United and Carrick, he wanted the public dispute consigned to the past, allowing them to resume winning as they had that evening.
Repaying Carrick after a sharp reversal in fortunes
Last season, Carrick secured 12 victories across 17 matches at the helm, restoring United to the Champions League following two years away. Those achievements earned him a contract lasting two years.
The current campaign has deteriorated rapidly, however. Just one success across their first nine Premier League outings has left United occupying 17th place.
Many anticipated the 45-year-old’s dismissal after the Bournemouth fixture. Instead, the directors opted to give him further scope to repair the situation at Old Trafford.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after Roma’s defeat, Youri Tielemans acknowledged the intense scrutiny surrounding Carrick. He presented the recovery as the players’ way of repaying their coach, highlighting the resolve and battling spirit behind it.
Tielemans pledges support as Mainoo expresses relief
The Old Trafford turnaround delivered United’s second victory in four Champions League appearances this term. It also moved them into 17th position in the competition’s league-phase standings.
When the question of Carrick’s job security was put to him, Tielemans treated that as a separate issue. His view was that the players’ remit extended only to backing their coach and competing wholeheartedly on behalf of both him and the club.
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo also conveyed his relief at finally halting the unsuccessful sequence. In his Amazon Prime interview, he described an immense release of tension, noted how long the team had needed this result and expressed hope that further success would follow.
